Springbank 12 Claret Wood Review – Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Nose is awesome and taste is fantastic, but the finish could be better. Juicy and winey, with some dry tannic bitterness in the finish.

Aged 9 years in refill bourbon casks, then another 3 years in claret casks

  • Nose:
  • Sweet and juicy. Ripe berries and vanilla cream. Burnt brown sugar and chocolate milkshake. Candle wax/smoke. Peppery, flinty and metallic.

  • Taste:
  • Rich, smooth and oily. Cranberry juice, dark chocolate, liquorice and sultanas. Coffee bitterness and oaky spiciness. The faintest hint of earthy peat and brine.

  • Finish:
  • Tart apples, grape seeds, roses and pine. Oak and tannins. Medium, bitter and dry.Springbank12-main
The nose is awesome and the taste is fantastic, but the finish could be better. This is a very juicy and winey dram, with some dry tannic bitterness in the finish – it sort of reminded of the Black Art 3 but nowhere near as complex or enchanting. Still a very enjoyable and interesting whisky.

Side note: I had a dram of the Calvados after this and I would rate them about the same. If any of the mods are reading this, please change the Springbank 12 Calvados to 88 in the archive. Thanks.

88/100
