Aberlour 12 Sherry Cask – Highlands (Speyside) Single Malt Scotch

As you can surmise, some guy at duty free read his note and handed him a different bottle. I wasn’t too sad, as the bottle of Aberlour 12 Sherry Cask was 1 L and cost less than a 750 ml in Ontario!

Yoichi 10 Review – A Highlander Single Malt from Japan

General Remarks: The Yoichi Distillery was built in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuri of Nikka Whisky. He studied Chemistry at the University of Glasgow between 1918 and 1920 and worked and learnt as apprentice at Distilleries like Longmorn and Hazelburn. Apparently he was very gifted because later on Masataka became a Master-Blender. Nowadays the Nikka Whisky Distilling Company is part of Asahi Breweries and also owns the Miyagikyo distillery in Sendai (Honshu). The Youchi 10 is the standard expression from the distillery and sells at around 70 US Dollars per bottle. The Yoichi 10 years matures in a mixture of new locally assembled Oak Hogsheads as well as Ex-Bourbon and Ex-Sherry Casks.

Jura Superstition Whisky Single Malt Scotch Whisky

I was iffy about scotch for the longest time. Most restaurants don’t really carry that many smokey, peaty scotches. I was out at an Irish bar, a long time ago, and I ordered a random Scotch, which they were out of. The nice waitress offered me the new one they had in stock at a discount, and thus I tried Jura Superstition. And I loved the idea of peat and smoke.

After that epiphany, I started trying more and more, did some other stuff, and now we’re here. Hope you didn’t get lost. I may not always have a bottle of it on hand, however I still have a soft spot for the distillery that got me started on enjoying this great drink we all love.

Green Spot Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey Review

Originally posted to Reddit by TOModera

As a reward to myself for being an awesome husband, I decided to try some Irish Whisky at our favourite Irish pub near the convention center, the Overdraught. And since it’s so hard to get, I ordered the Green Spot single pot still Irish whiskey. Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day.

Well, that’s not true. In fact I wanted to order the Connemara Peated Single Malt Irish Whiskey, though they were out, so I went for a normally very pricey Irish (in Ontario).

Green Spot is a blend of 8 and 9 year old single pot still Irish whiskey, 25% of which are matured in sherry casks. It’s somewhat rare, as only 500 cases are made a year, so keep an eye out for it.

Bushmills 16 Single Malt – The Whiskey that Thinks it’s a Whisky

40%ABV – $66.00USD

Background – This is an Irish single malt offering from Bushmills that is aged in 3 steps. For 16 years their spirit is matured in bourbon and oloroso sherry casks and then transfered to port wine barrels for an undisclosed period of time. While the 10 year is just awful in comparison, the 16 is a real standout in Bushmill’s lineup.
