From Sherry to Whiskey – The Life of a Cask [INFOGRAPHIC]

If you ever needed a reason to become an environmentalist, consider this:

Without forests there is no wine, no wine, no scotch…

Suddenly, protecting the environment takes a whole new meaning as you tenderly grasp your glass of Aberlour 12. In the infographic below, you see how a 70-80 year old oak tree produces only 2 64 gallon barrels:

Wiser’s Legacy – J.P. Wiser’s Canadian Pinnacle Rye Blend

Originally posted to Reddit by headlessparrot

Don’t be fooled by the lack of an age statement, or the fact that it’s not the most expensive entry in the Wiser’s portfolio, Wiser’s Legacy may be the absolute best whisky that the company makes—and possibly the best Canadian whisky there is out there.

It’s made from the recipe that company-founder J.P. Wiser was working on just before his death—a rye-heavy whisky (actual rye, unlike some Canadian whiskies: the only non-rye content in Legacy is a small amount of barley to assist in the fermentation/distillation process) made using traditional copper pot stills and aged in fresh, toasted oak.

Yoichi 10 Review – A Highlander Single Malt from Japan

Originally posted to Reddit by Jan-12

General Remarks: The Yoichi Distillery was built in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuri of Nikka Whisky. He studied Chemistry at the University of Glasgow between 1918 and 1920 and worked and learnt as apprentice at Distilleries like Longmorn and Hazelburn. Apparently he was very gifted because later on Masataka became a Master-Blender. Nowadays the Nikka Whisky Distilling Company is part of Asahi Breweries and also owns the Miyagikyo distillery in Sendai (Honshu). The Youchi 10 is the standard expression from the distillery and sells at around 70 US Dollars per bottle. The Yoichi 10 years matures in a mixture of new locally assembled Oak Hogsheads as well as Ex-Bourbon and Ex-Sherry Casks.

Karuizawa Asama Review – Japanese Single Malt Whisky

Originally posted to Reddit by esajz24.

Since we veered a bit away from Scotland with the French Kornog, let’s keep with that theme. It’s high time I reviewed another Japanese whisky! This time, the whisky in question is Asama, produced at the now closed Karuizawa distillery and bottled by the Number One Drinks Company.

Asama is an 11 year old bottling and contains sherry matured whisky that was distilled during 1999 and 2000, the final years of Karuizawa’s operation. So sad that the distillery closed… For now, at least, the most I can do is savor a glass of their whisky! Oh, an interesting tidbit is that the whisky is called Asama after Mount Asama, the volcano by which Karuizawa was built.

Still Waters Canadian Single Malt New Make, 100% Barley!

Originally posted on Reddit by bravado. Give him an upvote, he deserves it!

Still Waters is a brand new Canadian distillery in Concord, ON (Suburb of Toronto). They’re almost the exact opposite of a traditional, bland big Canadian distiller. Their twitter feed is very active, they seem to have distilled every possible whisky type under the sun and they’ve even set up a site[2] to log each of their casks as they fill them!

I was at the tiny distillery today on a quick road trip and decided to pick up their new ‘single malt’ new make spirit from 100% barley.
