Yellow Spot 12yr Review – Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey

Originally posted to Reddit by esajz24

Yellow Spot has recently been reintroduced as a 12 year old whisky. It’s garnered a lot of praise since its release, even winning Whisky Advocate’s Irish Whisky of the Year Award. I liked it NAS brother Green Spot, but Redbreast 12, another single pot still whisky from Midleton Distillery, was a real favorite. I think Yellow Spot has a good chance to follow in those footsteps, especially considering that is presented at 46% ABV and is non chill filtered. Good stuff!

Springbank 10 Year, 100 Proof (US bottling) – Campbeltown Single Malt

Originally posted to Reddit by brettrick.

Hey Scotchit, long-time lurker, first-time review (discounting the Bunnahabhain 12 community review a couple weeks ago). For my first review, I thought it’d be interesting to take a look at something procured through a swap over at ScotchSwap. This particular sample comes courtesy of TheDopeGodfather, who was kind enough to send his samples out in advance of me receiving my bottles. What a stand-up guy. Anyway, on to the review!

Karuizawa Asama Review – Japanese Single Malt Whisky

Originally posted to Reddit by esajz24.

Since we veered a bit away from Scotland with the French Kornog, let’s keep with that theme. It’s high time I reviewed another Japanese whisky! This time, the whisky in question is Asama, produced at the now closed Karuizawa distillery and bottled by the Number One Drinks Company.

Asama is an 11 year old bottling and contains sherry matured whisky that was distilled during 1999 and 2000, the final years of Karuizawa’s operation. So sad that the distillery closed… For now, at least, the most I can do is savor a glass of their whisky! Oh, an interesting tidbit is that the whisky is called Asama after Mount Asama, the volcano by which Karuizawa was built.

Laphroaig Càerdias Origin, 2012 Review – Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Originally posted to Reddit by draconiclyyours.

My wife got this for me as a gift for Valentine’s Day. I’ve had quite a few different scotches, but this was the first one that made me want to review it. Longtime Scotch drinker, longtime Scotchit lurker, first review!

Laphroaig Càerdias Origin, 2012 – 51.2% ABV

Details: 50/50 of 13-21yo spirit & 7yo QC matured spirit. Price unknown (Gift/MA). Notes: Reviewed neat in a Glencairn at room temperature (~68°F)

  • Color: Medium-Light amber
  • Nose: Peat, old wood (oak, hints of cedar), honey, charcoal
  • Palate: Woodsmoke, vanilla, honey, sweeter peat, hint of kerosene(?), sea air, and… glue? Very earthy, but not unpleasantly so.
  • Finish: Short, light, honeyed and inoffensive. Exceptionally smooth, didn’t even notice the fade at first
The first thing I noticed on popping this bottle open was the hammer blow to the nose. It has a far stronger first impression than any scotch I’ve had thus far, but by no means is it unpleasant. Rich, smokey, with a subtle undercurrent of peat and old wood, it instantly brought back memories of sitting around a campfire, trading stories and jokes at the end of the day.

Laphroaig-main

My initial sip only expanded on this. For having one of the higher ABVs I’ve ever sampled, the Càerdias was so smooth that it could have been use to oil my motorcycle. At no point did I feel the characteristic burn I’ve come to expect from whiskey; I was honestly tempted to pour a bit on the tabletop and light it just to see if it really had alcohol in it.

Tasting expanded the aforementioned aromas exponentially, while opening up the more subtle notes. This is a scotch that deserves to be held and rolled in the mouth for a moment– to anything less would be patently criminal.

The finish was the only point I found waning, even if only by the slightest of margins. The Càerdias finishes so quickly and smoothly that I honestly didn’t notice it fading until I realized that there was no flavor left lingering on my palate- I would have preferred a slightly longer finish, if only to maximize the experience.

Islay-Scotland-web

While I cannot vouch for the tagline of “the most richly flavoured of all Scotch whiskies”, I can say it is one of, if not the, most richly flavored Scotch that I have ever had the pleasure of drinking.

Overall: 93/100

I’ll be heading down to where my wife got this to see about purchasing another bottle or two to tuck away.

Not My Favorite Irishman – Bushmills 10 Single Malt

First impressions are Grains (Malt, Toast with Margarine), Straw/Hay and Dried Fruits (Raisins and Sultanas) followed by Nuts, Oak, light Fruity tones (Apple, Banana with light Honey, White Grapes and Coconuts), Milk Chocolate, Lemon Peel and the faintest hint of Sherry. Grains are rather dominating the Nose. The other flavours, while not unpleasant, are rather understated for a 10 Year old Single Malt.
